For the first time in several years losing weight was not one of my New Year's resolutions...

 

I moved to the UK in 2014. I've lived in a number of countries, but I've never lived in a place where I had to spend 2 hours commuting to work every day. Long commute combined with long hours at work affected my ability to remain active, particularly in autumn and winter months due to my preference for outdoor activities.

 

Over the next 4 years I had put on a lot of weight. I tried to overcome this several times with regular running and hiking, but struggled to achieve any meaningful weight loss. After multiple failed attempts my wife Gayathri suggested that I should meet Marta, her new personal trainer. Gayathri was already training with Marta for a few months and was beginning to realise fantastic results herself. I was very sceptical and reluctant to train with Marta, particularly because of her focus on weight training and nutrition, neither of which I particularly enjoyed.

 

Reluctantly, I met with Marta in Nov 2018 to figure out if she could help. When she asked me what my goals were, I mentioned to her that my primary objective is to lose 14kg (from 84kg to 70kg) in 6 months, although deep inside I told myself that it's a ridiculous objective and we would never achieve it. The last time I weighed 70kg was in college, nearly 25 years back!

 

The first two weeks of my training with Marta were the toughest. I could hardly get through the weight training sessions and the daily calorie intake Marta proposed seemed unrealistic to me. After the first two weeks I was still weighing the same and I started to lose hope. But I decided to continue the effort until the start of the New Year before jumping to conclusions.

 

At the end of week 3 I had suddenly lost 1kg. It surprised and motivated me. Over the next few days I started pushing myself a little harder. I started to see results every week. By the turn of the New Year I had already lost 4kg, in less than 6 weeks.

 

I started to believe in my weight loss objective and doubled down on both my workouts and nutrition. In addition to the 3 weight lifting sessions at the gym I also started running regularly and slowly increased the weekly mileage from ~20km to ~50km. I was not only beginning to lose weight consistently every week, but I also started feeling stronger and faster. Marta continued to push me in the gym.

 

By June 2019 I had already lost 14kg! (In less than 6 months!) I had also reduced my waist size by 4 inches, reduced my bodyfat to a very healthy level and generally felt a lot more positive every day. The only disadvantage was that I had to replace my entire wardrobe!

 

I attribute my success to getting the right combination of weight training, nutrition and cardio into my regime, based on recommendations and constant push from Marta. What makes Marta special, is her ability to pin you down to your objective and being fanatic in her follow-up and commitment to it. During this period she was more committed to my fitness objective than I was.

 

In July I took a (well deserved!) holiday break from my training regime. Now I am back at the gym with new goals set up and my fitness journey continues!
